Sweet on the Columbia Museum of Art

Last Saturday's Sweet on CMA event was so fun.  Lunch Money performed--you've heard me profess my love for them before here and here.

There were multiple Valentine's-related craft stations.

that's a good Daddy- making tissue paper flowers

And there was a photo booth.  And it was all FREE!

Jones and his friend from school, McCall!

Our little family enjoyed the heck out of it.  Thanks CMA and Junior League of Columbia for hosting!

A Local Gift Guide for the Sassy (and Classy) Woman in Your Life

(Clockwise, from top left)

So, let me be very honest: this gift guide is all things that I want.  And, I think, things your girlfriend or wife or mother or sister or best friend might want too. Here we go:

1. You can't go wrong with an Amsa Yoga class pass.  You can buy 5-class, 10-class, 20-class, or 1-month unlimited class passes, and the first class for new visitors is free.  I've waxed poetic about my love for Amsa before, but truthfully, there are lots of great local yoga studios in Columbia; find one and hit the mat.  It's like therapy and exercise in one.  (Photo courtesy of Amsa Yoga).

2. This necklace by local artist, January Jewelry, has the sort of vintage-boho feel that I adore.  It is so reasonably priced, and supports a local artist and a local shop, as it can be found at Nest, the new all-local maker's market inside the Marriott on Main Street.

3. I have a new favorite store in Columbia: Jack & Jane Sport.  I stopped in the other day to get some ideas of things I want the hubs to get me for Christmas, and this Oiselle top is definitely on the list.  Not only is it a pretty color and the perfect weight for running in Columbia right now, but you have to feel it to believe how soft this top is.  Susannah, one of the owners, helped me; she was genuinely friendly and not at all pushy.  They have great-quality athletic gear, and for men too.

 4. How about a bottle of bubbly?  Anything sparkling is my drink of choice, and a nice bottle is without a doubt one of the best gifts you can give, I think.  Kaitlin Ohlinger, a friend, and the General Manager of Cellar on Greene, and author of the wine snob, is happy to help you pick out a unique one.  This Evolution Sparkling from Oregon has a pretty sweet label.  I'm partial to Oregon wines in general, and this one is delicious!  (Sold out on-line, but Cellar has it!)

5. The Gourmet Shop is a great place to shop for gifts, especially for the foodie or chef on your list.  They have awesome gourmet candy, wine, cigars, prepared foods, and so much cool kitchen stuff!  And what lady wouldn't be happy with this daily reminder?  The You Rock ceramic catch-all is a perfect gift for any woman on your list.

6. How about a membership to the Columbia Museum of Art.  There's not much classier or more fun (and affordable!) than a year's pass to this beautiful and hip museum.  Besides the amazing art from renowned and classic artists, the museum also hosts cool events, and the museum shop is super-chic.  This gift would please so many people, and you'd earn some "class" points for giving something cultural and useful.  (The photo above is of Jones honing his skills in the CMA children's room).

So, here's the not-so-subtle hint for anyone looking to buy a gift for me this Christmas, and hopefully this helped you with something for the lady on your list!  Shop local!

Culture in Columbia

There is so much going on in Columbia, SC in the next few weeks!  So many events I want to attend and shows I want to see...alas, with a toddler at home, a husband who works most evenings, and a baby on the way, (read: I am tired all the time), it makes it a little challenging to do everything I want to.

Not sure what will shake out, but here are a few things I'm really hoping to partake in:
via here
Sleepwalk With Me at The Nickelodeon.  This film is by the producers of This American Life.  Need I say more?  (I love Ira Glass and I love that show--I even have the app on my phone!)  The film is playing at The Nick through October 18th.

via here
Red at Columbia Museum of Art.  You've probably heard that the CMA is exhibiting Mark Rothko works right now, (definitely on the to-do list).  Well, in conjunction with Trutus Theatre, they are also putting on a Broadway play of Rothko's life called Red.  Playing tonight through Sunday.

via here
NPR's Scott Simon, the host of Weekend Edition, will speak at USC on October 23rd as part of their Fall Literary Festival.  Another of my favorite NPR personalities and shows.

So, what are you up to these crisp Fall days?  There's plenty to choose from.   We're going to take the babe to the State Fair next week--can't wait to see him on the kiddie rides!

Art , Dogs & a Baby

That's what's on my list for tomorrow--visit the Columbia Museum of Art and shop for the dogs at Pupcakes Pet Boutique with Jones.  Then, tomorrow night we'll indulge at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse for dinner with some close family friends, a December 23rd tradition, (or as my Dad calls it- Christmas Eve Eve).

image via here
I am dying to see the Hudson River School Painters Exhibit; just gonna pop Jones in his sling and expose him to some beautiful art.  Then, we'll venture to Pupcakes to get new collars and treats for the dogs for Christmas.

I am off of work and Jones is out of school, and I can't imagine a more perfect day.

Happy Holidays!

Weekend Round-Up

There are plenty of fun things to do in Columbia this weekend!  I will be attending my nephew, Ben's, 4th birthday party on Saturday, and Sunday I hope to make it to the Columbia Museum of Art with baby and hubs.

Ben's birthday party is being held at Woodland Park, a really nice, shady park in our neighborhood.  My sister has asked that instead of gifts for Ben, guests bring art supplies to donate to the kids in the after-school program at St. Lawrence Place.  What an awesome thing to do, don't you think?  Ben will get plenty of gifts from family members, so he won't miss out on presents, I assure you-- and what an amazing and easy way to teach kids about giving back to those less fortunate!

image via here
Speaking of talking to your kids about helping others, Central Carolina Community Foundation has introduced an initiative to do just that: help you Talk About Giving with your children.  There is a game you can purchase and play with your kids, and right now they are giving away a $2,000 award to a local non-profit.  (By the way, St. Lawrence Place would appreciate your vote if you have a quick minute!)

The Columbia Museum of Art is currently exhibiting Rembrandt: From Sacred to Profane.

image via here
And have you heard about their new monthly event: Craft. Bar. Happy. Hour?!  You bring your own craft project to the museum and enjoy snacks, adult beverages, good conversation and inspiration.  Craft kits are available for purchase, and a different local artist/crafter will be on hand each month to display his/her work.  Cost is $20.  This month's event is Tuesday, July 26th at 6:00 PM and the artist is Sally Peek of Nana Bags.  (Her bags are sooo chic!)

image via here
Also, if I can swing it before the birthday party, we may head to Baan Sawan for the Bone-In Artisan BBQ Truck's  Baan-In Boozy Saturday Brunch!  Thai Bloody Mary's and Sriracha pulled BBQ pork-stuffed French toast.  Sounds awesome, right?
Follow the BBQ Truck on Twitter here so you always know where they are!

What else is going on in your life and town this weekend?
Happy Friday, loves!

Weekend Round-Up

This time of year there is always something going on around town--I love it!  I am planning to have a restful weekend, (if possible), as the babe has not been sleeping well lately, which means momma has not been sleeping well.  I hope there will be lots of lounging by the pool, naps, family time, and some homemade meals using veggies from our CSA.

One event I don't want to miss though is the final weekend of the Columbia Museum of Art's exhibit Who Shot Rock & Roll.   "The exhibition includes 175 works by more than 100 photographers and covers the rock and roll era from the 1950s to the present including some of the world's most iconic images." I am definitely going to try to go with the hubs and babe on Sunday.
image via here
I would also like to mosey (love that word) around the All Local Farmer's Market on Saturday morning and someday soon, if not this weekend, I want to visit Judy's At the Market Restaurant at the SC State Farmers Market.  It just opened this month, and the menu looks yummy.  They make everything from scratch and their motto is "fresh, healthy and local."

For all of my expectant-mother (and father) friends--don't miss the Palmetto Health Oh Baby! event  at the convention center!  It's free and there will be tons of baby vendors, pediatricians, a fashion show and more.

Here's to a lovely spring weekend--full of almost 90-degree temps here in Columbia, and hopefully some rest!  What are you up to?

Looking Forward Columbia

I am slowly, but surely, getting the hang of this working mom thing.  It is not for the faint of heart.  Juggling childcare, (which is piece-meal right now since Jones can't start daycare until June), work, showers (yes, these have to be scheduled now!), laundry, dishes, diapers, breast feeding/pumping, exercise, family-time, couple-time, and friends, is a lot of work, and takes careful balancing of time.  I am so lucky to have a wonderful husband and family to help, but seriously, it's a lot to figure out!

But, with all that said, I am getting better with the time management thing and adjusting to my altered sleep schedule, so hopefully my blog posts will become more regular again.

Spring is such a fun time in Columbia--so many things going on!  Here are a few I'm looking forward to in the next few weeks:

Springtime at the Garden Festival at Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden: This Saturday from 9-4.  There will be Master Gardeners on-hand to answer your gardening questions--I'm hoping to ask how to (organically) prevent those pesky vine-borers from killing my squash plants this year--and composting demonstrations.  There will also be live music and arts and crafts for the kids.  Free with membership or general admission.

image via here

Assassins at Trustus Theatre: From the Trustus website: "ASSASSINS is perhaps the most controversial musical ever written. This most American of musicals lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, in a historical "revusical" that explores the dark side of the American experience."  Sounds interesting, huh?  The show runs March 25th- April 16th.  James and I will be in attendance on April 7th.

Arts & Draughts
image via here

Arts and Draughts at CMA:  The Columbia Museum of Art hosts this First Friday event one last time before the summer--April 1, 2011.  You can explore open galleries, listen to live music, see a live figure drawing session, and taste beer at the same time--$5 for CMA members and $7 for non-members.  Doors open at 7, music begins at 8.

KD's Treehouse Little Earth Day Celebration: Saturday: April 9th from 10-1, in the parking lot behind KD's Treehouse.  There will be arts & crafts for kids, live music from The Steel Band Project, a local writer book-signing and more!  Fun for the kiddos!

image via here

Slow Food at Indie Grits Sustainable Chef's Tasting Party & Hosted Potluck:
Wednesday, April 13th at 6:30 PM in the All Local Farmer's Market building on Whaley Street- join local chefs dedicated to sustainable and local ingredients for a tasting.  There will also be live music, locally-brewed beers, and wine.  $20 for Slow Food and Nickelodeon members, $40 general admission.

What are you looking forward to in the next few warm spring-time weeks?

The Tuesday Run-Down

It is quite chilly here in Columbia, (and we're not really used to it)...so, 'tis the season for indoor activities. Here are some things that I am looking forward to in the coming weeks:

image via here

1. A Serious Man is playing for one more night at The Nickelodeon; show times 6 and 8 pm tonight. "Filmmaking duo Joel and Ethan Coen write, produce, and direct this period black comedy set in 1967 concerning a Midwestern physics professor whose staid and stable life slowly begins to unravel after his wife announces that she's leaving him." I'm going to the 8 o'clock show; I'll review later in the week.

image via here

2. Rent is playing at Trustus Theater January 7-23. I have never seen this Broadway classic, and I am so excited to do so! Thanks to my mother-in-law for buying me tickets for my birthday.

image via here

3. Photography As Art film showing at the Columbia Museum of Art this Friday, January 8th at noon. Cost is FREE with museum admission or membership. This may turn out to be a bit technical for my limited understanding of photography, but I'm interested all the same. Running time 29 minutes. The museum is still showcasing Ansel Adams: Masterworks and The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States through January 17th; both of these are must-see exhibits. There is also a gallery talk by USC art history professor Dr. Brad Collins about the Vogel exhibit this Sunday, January 10th at 3:00 pm, which is FREE courtesy of BlueCross BlueShield.

image via here

4. The World Beer Festival will be held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on January 16, 2010. Ticket prices range from $40- $75, and includes beers to taste from over 100 breweries. I have never been to this event, but everyone I have heard from said it was awesome last year! Click here to purchase tickets and read more.

A list of upcoming local music events and shows to come later in the week...

31 Things in my 31st Year

So, tomorrow, (as in less than 1 hour from now), is my 31st birthday. Wow. Still sounds old.

Here is my list of 31 Things to accomplish in my 31st Year. Some are pretty simple and some are a bit more challenging, but exciting all the same:

31 Things…

  1. Become more aware of what I eat, where it comes from, and how it affects my health. (Read Eating Animals).

  1. Run at least 5 races (5K or 8K). (The next one will be the Race for the Place 5K to benefit St. Lawrence Place, February 6th).

  1. Video tape my grandmother cooking some of her best dishes, (the ones she can’t write down the recipe for since she ‘just throws some things together’).

  1. Video tape my sister giving birth to her second baby…(no NatGeo shots, just document the event).

  1. Create something new at least once a month—(sew something, write something, cook something, make something).

  1. Take a road trip to Washington, DC. (Been wanting to go back for a couple years and just haven’t gotten around to it; Aunt LeAnn, here we come!)

  1. Call friends who live out of town; at least one a month.

  1. Get a pedicure at least every 6 weeks; the money saved by not doing so is not worth the embarrassing-looking toes.

  1. Volunteer somewhere new. I am thinking of getting a Meals on Wheels delivery route.

  1. Train my dogs to walk civilly on leashes. And then take them on regular walks.

  1. Wear sunscreen more vigilantly. (Can’t promise I will not sunbathe, but I’ll at least wear SPF 15 when I do).

  1. Start a new book club—yay!

  1. Entertain people at our house at least once a month; whether it be a small dinner party or a party party…it just makes me happy.

  1. Frequent the Columbia farmer’s markets more often—the State farmer’s market and the All Local one.

  1. Read East of Eden; a classic, and one highly recommended recently by a friend.

  1. Forgive myself and move on for not being able to finish Atlas Shrugged.

  1. Figure out how to re-design the look of my blog and do it.

  1. Learn to bake bread.

Image via here
  1. Make something using the immersion blender that we registered for and received for a wedding present.

  1. Organize my recipes.

  1. Take more pictures.

  1. Save up for our next big vacation…which will hopefully be somewhere in Central America, Europe, or back to the West Coast…

  1. Buy more fresh flowers.
    Image via here

  1. Write more.

  1. Do something spiritual at least once a week.

  1. Eat more fresh fruit and veggies.

  1. Plant (and keep up) an amazing spring/summer garden.

  1. Call my grandmother at least once a week to hang out.

  1. Learn to knit.

  1. Patronize local art, theater, restaurants, music, etc as much as possible.(The Nickelodeon, Columbia Museum of Art, Trustus Theater, etc...)

  1. Forgive myself if I don’t accomplish all of these things this year :)

A Word for Wednesday

I

ndomitable: unconquerable; unyielding; that cannot be overcome, such as persons, will, or courage

I heard this word, or a form of it, used to describe Herb and Dorothy Vogel's quest and appetite for collecting minimalist and conceptual art in the movie Herb & Dorothy. The movie was quite entertaining, and although it is no longer playing at The Nickelodeon, part of their art collection is being shown at the Columbia Museum of Art through January 17, 2010. (And I'm sure you can Netflix the movie--it's worth watching if you are at all interested in art, or if you would simply like to see the dynamics of a cute old couple who've been married 45 years).

The September Issue...(in October)

via here

I saw The September Issue at The Nickelodeon Wednesday evening; it was a packed house.* If you have even the slightest interest in fashion, I highly recommend this film. The relationship between Anna Wintour, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, whom this documentary is mostly about, and her Creative Director, Grace Coddington, is entertaining to watch. And at times difficult to watch.

I couldn't help but keep thinking that it was similar to the relationship that Rachel Zoe and Taylor Jacobson have...or me and my boss for that matter. (Not because my boss is bitchy, because she is not, but because she and I have very different opinions at times and very different ways of dealing with things, but somehow we balance eachother and it works). This movie highlights the not-so-pretty but very real inner workings of a great team.

In other news, I am so excited about the weather change in Columbia--it is finally cooler and I have to admit that I love the dreary days. Overcast and cool makes me yearn for a fire in the fireplace and dogs to cuddle with on the sofa. It also makes for a much more enjoyable run when it's below 70 degrees outside.

Here's what I'm excited about this weekend:

Going to pick out pumpkins with my 2-year old nephew at the Trenholm Road United Methodist Church pumpkin patch. We did this last year as well, but Ben was just starting to walk and was a little unsteady...he fell and hit his head on a pumpkin...here's to hoping that I'm not such an irresponsible aunt this year.

Haven't been to this event in years, but I am so excited for it tomorrow! 11AM-7PM.

Dinner at the brand-new restaurant Granville's on Devine Street in Columbia Saturday night, and catching up with a friend I haven't seen in a while. Here's what The Columbia Foodie had to say about this new small bites spot...My review to come in the next blog.

On Sunday I hope to go the Columbia Museum of Art with the hubs to see Cleve Gray

and Ansel Adams exhibits. images via here

And then, school work completed by a fire with dogs at my feet...sounds like an amazing fall weekend in Columbia.

*Unfortunately, The September Issue is no longer playing at The Nick, but put it in your Netflix queue.
