Denver Eats (Well)

I was in Denver, CO last week for a quick 2-night work trip.  While there we managed to dine at a few very cool local places.

LaLa's Artista Pizza

LaLa's Wine Bar & Pizzeria- great, creative pizzas.  The anchoviest-Caesar salad dressing I've ever eaten, but in a good way.  Nice, neighborhoody-feel.  Would be an awesome place to enjoy a happy hour drink or three, al fresco.

Caffe Sanora- we ate breakfast here-- right across the street from our hotel.  Very friendly service; amazing homemade sundried tomato & asparagus quiche.  In fact, since eating it, I've been on a major quiche-kick...made 7 in the past week!  (5 were to give as end-of-the-year gifts to Jones' teachers).  A decidedly local and hippie-ish place (all organic); I talked with a local mom about her 13-month-olds' use of sign language over breakfast--only in Denver!

Las Margaritas- Pretty heavy stuff for a lunch, but it serves authentic Mexican food.  Since it was a working lunch, I didn't indulge in a Margarita, but hear they are good.  The salsa was amazing.  Wish I had brought some home.

Popcorn and Cava at Linger

Linger- The "trendiest" of the spots we ate on the trip, but still, with a down-to-earth and friendly feel.  Popcorn is the gratis tablefare, differently-spiced each night.  The view of the city is fantastic.  We sat right by the "open wall" and had some awesome small plates.

All-in-all, not a bad list of restaurants in Denver, considering we were only there 48 hours and we worked most of it!

Oh, and a fun tidbit about Denver, they ID everyone.  Seriously, everywhere I ordered a drink I was carded.  And it was awesome.

Pizza and Wine

What's not to like about that combination?  There are plenty of amazing local restaurants in Columbia that make this combination even more amazing by making it cheap!

In case you want an amazing pizza and wine deal more than once in a week, here's where you should go and when:

image via here
Tuesday nights: Tombo Grille offers $5 pizzas and $15 bottles of wine every Tuesday.  Click here for other daily specials.

Rosso menu
image via here
Wednesday nights: from 5- 6:30 PM, Rosso offers $7 brick-oven pizzas and $5 wine tasting.

image via here
Thursday nights: Cellar on Greene offers 2 individual pizzas and a bottle of wine for $25.  Plus, Tuesdays are Champagne Tuesdays...half-priced bubblys!

And, just a quick run-down of my other favorite Columbia pizzas...Labrasca's (they have the best cheese salad too, and they'll let you buy uncooked pizzas to "take and bake" later); Pizza Man; and The Whig- $1 slices on Monday nights.  Also, the Village Idiot on Forest Drive has a Monday deal where you buy one pizza, get one free!

Can you tell I'm craving pizza and wine today?

What are your favorite pizza joints and dinner specials in Columbia?

Thirsty Fellow & Reasons to Be Pretty

I finally got to the (relatively) new pizza and beer joint, Thirsty Fellow, a couple weeks ago.  It's located near the Colonial Center, and the atmosphere is pretty chill.  Lots of books lining the walls, pretty dark, and really big!

My friend and I ordered a large pretzel for appetizer--it was just what one would expect and want from a big pretzel; a bit of crunch on the outside, but doughy and warm on the inside, served with that fake cheesey sauce that I love with a pretzel!

For my meal I ordered a pizza with olives and red onions.  The crust was relatively thin--definitely not too thick, sort of a thinner Labrasca's-type crust.  I enjoyed it both that evening, and the next day cold for my lunch--(which is always the true test for me--I often enjoy pizza better cold than hot).

My friend had a loaded hotdog and a side salad.  She is a hotdog connoisseur, and said it was quite tasty.  Click here for more of their menu.  (They also have a Brunch menu).

So there you have it--Thirsty Fellow was a winner in my book.  And everything is really affordable.

Last night I went to Saluda's for dinner with my husband, mother-in-law and aunt.  The food was amazing!  I haven't been there in quite sometime; it is pretty fine dining after all, and that doesn't often fit into our budget.  But if you need an amazing place to take a date and you're trying to make a good impression, I highly recommend it.  (Sorry no pictures; left the camera at home).

After an early dinner, we headed to Trustus Theatre to see Reasons to Be Pretty.  The show runs through next weekend, and it has gotten a good review in The Free Times- read it here.  We all really enjoyed it--go support local theater.

Hope everyone has a wonderful, chilly weekend!  I am so excited to finally wear winter clothes and have fires in the fireplace; we had our first of the season this week and it was divine.

XO,
Becca

Chat Roulette, Ben, and Pizza

The Ben Folds show in Charlotte was the best BF I have seen. The Fillmore was an awesome venue--small enough to feel intimate, but big enough to accommodate a decent-size crowd; (over 2,000 people were there Friday night). And it had cool modern chandeliers that my stupid camera wouldn't take decent pictures of...

Anyway- Ben Folds utilized Chat Roulette--a new site that you should NOT check out on a work computer, or in front of children--as part of the show. Chat Roulette is a new website where you get randomly linked with other "chatters" via webcam...as Ben introduced it, it is mostly lonely guys missing clothing, sometimes showing parts of themselves you'd rather not see... He basically linked up with people live and played/sang to them, seeing how they would react. See the video below:

I haven't laughed that hard in a very long time. We only saw one inappropriate body part and one dude sitting on the toilet. As my friend Matt put it after the show, "Ben Folds is a wizard of entertainment."

After some after-show drinks at BlackFinn with friends I hadn't seen in a long time, (had fun Laura and MJ!), I decided pizza was in order.

My friend Laura described Libretto's pizza as some of the best she had ever had. To quote Laura: "I don't even like pizza, and I crave Libretto's." It did not disappoint. I ordered the Pizza Bianca and I think I have dreamed of it every night since.

A Word for Wednesday- and a Restaurant Review

C

omplement:
to complete or make perfect

As in: The glass of Mirabelle Brut champagne that I ordered at Cellar on the Greene last night was the perfect complement to the Cheese Pizza with fresh basil.

Not to be confused with compliment--which is the main reason I chose this word for today, because I have seen it wrongly-used recently--compliment with an "i" means an expression of esteem or approval.

I am half-way through my Hampton Hills Biggest Loser Challenge--6 weeks in, and I have officially lost 17.6 lbs! We had a weigh-in last night, and I decided that I deserved a "cheat-night" afterward, and that included Cellar on the Greene's Champagne Tuesday and a pizza.

image via here

Cellar has Champagne Tuesday EVERY Tuesday, where they feature 4-5 champagnes for really cheap prices. You can order by the glass or order a bottle to take home. I got my glass of Mirabelle for only $5, (regularly $9), and also bought a bottle to take home for only $19!! (Regularly menu-priced at $45, and on-line for $22). I love a bargain, especially of the champagne-variety.

The cheese pizza was divine--as you all know, I adore pizza, but this one was particularly amazing. Freshly-grated parmesan and manchego cheeses atop a crispy-thin crust and local tomato marinara, sprinkled with fresh basil chiffonade. Yum! Click here to see the rest of Cellar's menu. (Sorry, I have no pictures--I was so excited and overwhelmed by the taste of champagne and pizza, that I didn't once slow down or think to snap photos).

They always offer a $19 3-course special, and on Thursdays offer a 2-pizza and one bottle of wine all for $25 special. Every other Saturday they have a huge wine-tasting and sale from 12-2 pm. (They will be closed this Saturday for St. Pat's).

In addition to serving great food and awesome wines and champagnes for really reasonable prices, the staff of the Cellar is super-nice and generous! Our bartender, Laurel, was very knowledgeable about the wine and champagne and even offered me a free taste of another champagne on the menu--Cava Castellroig; she deemed it "chuggable" and I have to agree--it was very crisp and went down dangerously easy.

Kaitlin is another member of the Cellar staff and she writes her own blog, The Wine Snob--check it out for recommendations and commentary on some great wines.
Thanks, ladies and gents of Cellar on the Greene for an awesome "cheat night!"

Now, back to the Biggest Loser-approved foods/drinks for 6 weeks more...

West Vista Adventures- Part 1

Ever heard of the "West Vista?" Well, maybe you've never heard it called that, (I hadn't), but basically it's the area right over the Gervais St. bridge into West Columbia--and it is up-and-coming. I spent Thursday evening across the river and it was so much fun, I will definitely go back soon.

We started our evening at @116 Espresso and Wine Bar. I blogged about wanting to try this place a couple weeks ago, and I have been stalking their menu since then, waiting for the perfect night to try it out with our friends Matt and Rebecca. (Matt and Rebecca appreciate good food and drinks as much as James and I do, which is important when wanting to have a meal to be savored and enjoyed).

A brief description of the atmosphere and service: @116 is located on State Street, which is a cool strip of restaurants, bars, and a few interspersed shops. Just to give you an idea of the locales on State Street--it houses New Brookland Tavern, Cafe Strudel, State Street Pub, Good Times (more about that in a later post), Terra-(which I still need to try), and @116, plus some. @116 has a very comfortable, neighborhood hang-out feel, with local art on the walls, and mismatched tables and chairs. There is a small bar in the back of the restaurant. We chose the only 4-top table available at the front of the restaurant that gave us a nice view of the street. The server, Amanda, who was the only server for the whole restaurant, was very personable and knowledgeable about the menu. She freely gave recommendations and was perfectly attentive without being over-bearing. The bartender helped Amanda deliver food on a few occasions, and he was also very nice. Rebecca and I commented several times how much we liked the atmosphere--it is unlike any other restaurant I can think of in Columbia. It felt like we had just discovered a hidden gem--a place that is part dive, but also au courant.

And on to the food: @116's menu consists of a page of Tapas, a section of Sopas y Ensaladas, and Pizzas. There was also a hefty list of specials, listed on the board pictured below.

They had some wine specials, including a couple $4/glass and $18/bottle wines. We chose a bottle of Garnacha De Fuego, a light red wine, which Amanda accurately described as having a slight cherry finish. It was good.

Our group ordered a variety of items-here's a run-down and a brief note on each item:
Mediterranean Platter- they were out of Falafel for this plate, but the chef substituted a chick pea/red onion salad to take it's place and it was yummy. The Marinated Orzo Salad was my favorite item on the plate.

Mediterranean Platter- orzo salad, hummus, pita, reconstituted sun-dried tomatoes, olives, pickled veggies, and chick pea salad
{sorry for the horrible picture quality--still trying to figure out my new camera}
Hot Onion and Bleu Cheese Dip served with Toasted Baguette- ah-mazing. I could easily have eaten the whole thing by myself, (but resisted...my trainer will be proud).

Onion Bleu Cheese dip--aka Heaven in a bowl--when we ran out of baguette, we ate it with a spoon
Smoked Tomato Bisque- really thick and rich; a little too smoky for my taste, but others at the table liked the smokiness. Also served with nice crusty, warm baguette.

2 pizzas- a Spanish Pie which was topped with goat cheese, bell pepper, spinach and Serrano ham, and the Chef's Pie with goat cheese, Serrano ham, pepperoni and extra garlic. The pizzas are just like I like them--made on crispy, thin flatbread crust and not over-powered by the sauce. (Simple, yet quality base ingredients allow for more sophisticated toppings to be showcased as they should).

Rebecca and I both got a special salad which
consisted of spinach with strawberries, walnuts, red onion, bleu cheese crumbles and a simple olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette. Very fresh and classic.

Coffee Spiced Flank Steak- I didn't taste this one, but Matt said it was interesting, (not sure what he really thought of it, but he finished it all). I did taste the mashed potatoes that accompanied this dish and they were also interesting...there was an herb taste that we couldn't quite place. I guessed tarragon and James guessed thyme; Amanda asked the Chef for us and it was actually thyme, (1 point James).

Coffee-Spiced Flank Steak

Empanada of the Day- there were actually 2 to choose from, one with meat and the other vegetarian, (which I appreciated). James ordered the vegetable version and it was truly a Spanish empanada--the dough was fried crisp on the outside, but was pretty thick, and so good dipped in the minted sour cream dipping sauce. (Which tasted pretty close to a tzatziki sauce--a nice, fresh complement to the heavy empanada). It was accompanied by a few fried plantain nuggets. James was very impressed that he could see the authentic fork marks around the edges of the empanadas--truly homemade.

Empanandas
{again, horrible pic, sorry}
And finally, (told you we all like to eat!), I ordered another special, Spinach ravioli. It was a very hearty serving, and a pretty classic and delicious pasta dish.

It's not surprising that we didn't have room for dessert, and I regret I didn't even ask what they were. Next time.

Bottom line--awesome service and atmosphere; food that would bring me back even if I didn't already love everything else! And some cool "icing-on-the-cake" tidbits: my husband loved the music--he assumes it was satellite radio, but he said they played some Stevie Ray Vaughn and Deja Voodoo by Kenny Wayne Shepard. He was impressed. They also have a White Russian menu; very chic and different.
And, if you're a local artist, get in touch with them via their website; their recent ad in the Free Times says they're looking for new artists to display in the restaurant for Spring.

We'll be back soon! Thanks @116 for a great experience.
