As in: The "Myth Smashers" episode of Good Eats that I watched last night--Alton Brown consulted what he called "a tome on cooking know-how, full of culinary information like 'don't submerge mushrooms in water or they will soak it up.'" (Which, by the way, is a myth that Alton later debunked).
